John Knox remained in England for five years, being a pastor in Berwick and Newcastle and; he assisted the reformers preparing church services. In 1551 he was appointed one of Edward VI’s chaplain’s, but he turned down the offer of the bishopric of Rochester. On the accession of Mary I Knox went to Geneva where he pursued his studies, became friends with Calvin and others, and became pastor of an English congregation in Frankfurt until a minority drove him out. He was accused of treason for having said that the Emperor was little better than Nero and Queen Mary I was more cruel than Jezebel. The magistrates of Frankfurt were afraid for his safety, so he returned to Geneva and on reciving a call from some friends he left for Scotland in 1555.
