Durham is the most beautiful Cathedral I have seen. It is pure Norman and so simple; there are few memorials, which adds to the beauty of the place. The Venerable Bede, as well as Cuthbert, is believed to be buried here.

Cuthbert was the great Celtic bishop of Lindisfarne (634-687). Unfortunately he did not have the guile that was required at the Synod of Whitby to persuade the King of Northumbria to refuse the Pope's desire to force the Church to bow the knee to Rome.
In 875 the Vikings invaded Lindisfarne, so the monks fled, carrying Cuthbert's body with them. For the next two hundred years his body found several resting places, until he was finally buried in the new Durham Cathedral in 1104.
