Site History

John Copping was a Puritan minister in Bury St Edmunds, but he was imprisoned by the Bishop of Norwich in 1576 for 'false and malicious opinions'. He was then released, but imprisoned again for five years for persisting in his opinions. He was joined there by Elias Thacker and they were tried and found guilty of distributing Robert Brown's seditious book. The book subverted the constitution of the established church and denied the queen's supremacy in eclesiastical matters. Not surprising as Brown was a founder of Congregationalism.

They were hanged in June 1583.
