Site History

John Wesley visited Port Isaac around a dozen times. He wrote in his journal on September 19th 1748, 'Thence I went to Port Isaac, and preached in the street at five to near the whole town, none speaking an unkind word. It rained most of the time, but I believe not five persons went away.'

He wrote on September 21st 1762, 'I rode on to Port Isaac. Here the stewards of the eastern ciruit met. What a change is wrought in one years time! That detestable practice of cheating the King (smuggling) is no more found in our societies. And since that accursed thing has been put away, the work of God has everywhere increased. This society, in particular, is more than doubled; and they are all alive to God.'
