George Fox Beaten (1651)

When Fox came to the church the doors were locked against him but the Vicar finally opened them. He asked Fox many questions so Fox said 'Seeing there are so many questions asked I may answer them.' No sooner had he spoken than the Vicar and the congregation attacked him, driving him from the church with sticks, stones and sods of earth. He says in his journal 'with the Lord's refreshing power, I was not sensible to much hurt I had received by their blows.'
