Hermon Welsh Wesleyan Methodist Chapel - Ashton-in-Makerfield (1905)

We are pleased to be able to bear witness, through your celebrated publication, to the situation at Hermon (Wesleyan) chapel in this town. In the religious sense, Hermon is at a high point these days, in that she has partaken of the Revival about which we have heard so much, which is so manifest, so vital, and so real in Wales. For the last three weeks there have been prayer meetings here at seven o'clock every evening, some of them continuing till the early hours, to beg for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Old people, the middle-aged, and the young men and women in particular are still drawing on the ropes of God's promises every evening [quotation from a poem: "Does your faith have a strong and unrelaxing grip on the old ropes of the great promises of heaven?"], and to their comfort and joy their prayers are answered, as the Divine anointing has, as it were, been poured out on the church, sinners putting down their weapons and accepting Christ as their Saviour. How delightful it is to see young men begging for the salvation of their fathers, and bringing their brothers and sisters before the throne of grace. The mothers and the young women are equally importunate at the throne of grace. And the week before last there were two sermons: one in Welsh on Tuesday evening, and one in English on Thursday evening, by the Rev. Hugh Allen Roberts, Ashton, who is a student at the Richmond [?]Institute, London. Hermon church can take pride in the fact that she has produced and brought up such an able young man, so active in the vineyard of our Lord, as is the Rev H Allen Roberts, whose father is an elder and lay preacher on the Mynydd Seion circuit, Liverpool. We hope that the fire that has been lit in Hermon will spread like a blaze through Ashton and the vicinity. Currently there are 18 converts. We admire the work of brother Edmund Evans and others who go about seeking to bring people to the meetings and holding prayer meetings in various homes in an area where sin is rampant. We wish God's blessing on their work. We are certain that this success at Hermon is a subject for rejoicing for the church in general, and particularly for the fathers, our elders, Messrs. Hugh Roberts, John Griffiths, and Levi Hughes, since they remember the time when the cause in Ashton was [?] in its infancy. May they live to see yet further success in the future?

Additional Information

Da gennym ddwyn tystiolaeth trwy gyfrwg eich newyddiadur clodfawr i sefyllfa pethau yn eglwys Hermon  (W) y dref hon. Yn yr ystyr grefyddol y mae Hermon ar ei huchel-fanau y dyddiau hyn, a hynny am ei bod hi wedi cyfranogi o'r Diwygiad ag yr ydym wedi clywed cymaint o son am dano, yr hwn sydd mor amlwg, mor fyw, a gwirioneddol yn Nghymru. Am y tair wythnos ddiweddaf y mae yma gyfarfodydd gweddio wedi bod yn dechreu am saith o'r gloch bob nos, a rhai ohonynt yn parhau hyd orfau man y boreu, i erfyn am dywalltiad o'r Yspryd Glan. Hen bobl, canol oed, ac yn neulltuol y bechgyn a'r genethod ieuainc yn dal i dynu yn rhaffau addewidion Duw bob nos, ac er cysur a llawenydd iddynt atebir eu gweddiau, gan fod yr eneiniad Dwyfol megis wedi ei dywallt ar yr eglwys, pechaduriaid yn rhoddi eu harfau i lawr ac yn derbyn Crist fel eu Gwaredwr. Mor ddymunol yw gweled bechgyn ieuainc yn erfyn am achubiaeth eu tadau, ac yn dwyn eu brodyr a'u chwiorydd o flaen gorsedd gras. Gall eglwys Hermon ymfalchio am ei bod wedi magu a dwyn i fyny wr ieuanc mor alluog, mor weithgar yn ngwinllan ein Harglwydd ag ydyw y Parch H Allen Roberts, fad yr hwn sydd yn flaenor a phregethwr cynorthwyol  ar gylchdaith Mynydd Seion, Lerpwl. Ein dymuniad ydyw ar i'r tan sydd wedi ei gyneu yn Hermon ymledaenu a myned y goelcerth megis trwy Ashton a'n cyffinlau. Nifer y dychweledigion ar hyn o bryd ydyw 18. Edmygwm waith y brawd Edmund Evans ac eraill yn myned oddiamgylch i geisio gan bobl fyned i'r cyfarfodydd, a chynhal moddion gweddio yn y ty yma a'r ty arall mewn rhanbarth ag y mae pechod mor uchel ei ben. Dymunwn fendith Duw ar eu gwaith. Y mae yn sicr gennym fod y llwydlant hwn yn Hermon yn destyn llawenydd i'r eglwys yn gyffredinol, ac yn neulltuol i'r tadau, sef ein blaenoriaid, Mri Hugh Roberts, John Griffiths, a Levi Hughes, gan eu bod hwy yn cofio 'Dydd y pethau bychain' ar yr achos yn Ashton. Bydded iddynt gael byw i weled mwy o lwyddiant eto yn y dyfodol ydyw dymuniad.
